Social Media

Convince me a salted rim marg beats a Tajin one. Go ahead, I dare you. Because, umm, it doesn’t. Tajin wins all day, every day. And especially on a spicy marg.

What exactly, you’re wondering, does this have to do with copywriting? Well, for starters, you’re reading this, aren’t you? 😏 That’s our first tip in our TOP FIVE TIPS FOR WRITING BETTER COPY (margarita-style).

Our Top 5 Tips For Writing Better Copy

NO. 1: GRAB US FROM THE GET-GO

Conflict creates interest. That’s why I started with a little rim of Tajin.

If you’re going to tell us a story, you gotta grab us from the get-go. Nobody likes a boring story, Linda. Write copy with a click-y / compelling / contrary something to pull us in.

NO. 2: PEPPER IT WITH PERSONALITY

Spice it up like you rim a glass with Tajin.

Happy news, you’re alive! You’re not a robot! No AI here, sister. You talk with inflection and facial expressions and hand gestures and alllllll the little things that make you YOU! 🎉

Make your writing sound and feel like you. Conversational. Relational. Real. Pepper it with your personality. Trust me. Your reader wants a little spice.

NO. 3: GO FOR THE PUNCH.

Good copy is like tequila. It should punch you in the face.

What does this mean for your copy? → Shorten your sentences, Sis.

Commas often give us long, painful sentences, like this one, which lots of waxing poetic-types think are clever, but real people, like you and me, find absolutely torturous because they go on and on without actually saying a damn thing. Yawwwwwn. Click out.

We like short sentences. Amiright? Go for the punch. Keep it fresh. Make mine a double.

NO. 4: CUT THE CRAP

When you write crisp, conversion-forward copy, cut ALL the extra words. ALL of them. Be ruthless. Spare none.

I think one of the most compelling tactics is to cut words that don’t hold meaning.

To tighten up your sentences, try writing in the active voice. Write in the active voice to tighten your sentences.

Cut words that you don’t need.

Filler words are like sweet-and-sour mix in well drinks. NO.THANK.YOU. Cut the crap. Gimme fresh squeezed lime and a little agave.

NO. 5: MAKE IT ABOUT THEM

Consider when the iPod was first released.

❌  The world’s first portable, digital media player.

✅  1,000 songs in your pocket.

When you make it about them, it sells. Listen Linda, no one wants to hear you drone on about what you do. So before you write a sentence, skip to the good part—how does it make their life BETTER?

❌  We sell margaritas to copywriters.

✅  The cure for writer’s block starts with Tajin.

OK, friends, what do you think? Got anything to add? Or just wanna’ tell me how you rim your marg? Join the conversation below! ↓
